Adega Algueira

Adega Algueira is a family winery in Ribeira Sacra, in Galicia, with vineyards on steep slopes that drop down to the Sil River. It is one of the leading names in the region.

When Fernando González Riveiro arrived in 1980, the old terraces had been abandoned for years after phylloxera, hard times and civil war. He saw what they could be and began to bring them back. In 1996, the year the Ribeira Sacra appellation was born, he built his winery in Amandi.

Today he works with his son Fabio across 130 small plots, about 30 hectares in all, planted with local grapes such as Mencía, Godello and Albariño. Some slopes are so steep that everything is done by hand. They use wild yeasts and make each plot separately: slate gives taut, mineral Mencía, while granite brings freshness to the whites.
