Producer Mendoza, Argentina

Altos Las Hormigas

Alberto Antonini and Antonio Morescalchi are old friends. On a first trip to Mendoza in 1995 they loved the vineyards they found. Altos Las Hormigas, the estate they set up, is now one of Argentina's top Malbec names.

They work closely with soil expert Pedro Parra to pick the best sites, and many are certified organic. Luján de Cuyo gives dark colour and fine tannins, while the high, limestone sites of the Uco Valley, such as Altamira and Gualtallary, bring perfume and a fuller feel in the mouth.

Federico Gambetta became winemaker in 2020. The team farms biodynamically and does as little as possible in the cellar. Beside the Malbecs there is a juicy Bonarda and a white blend of Chenin Blanc, Pedro Giménez and Semillon. In one vineyard, 40 per cent of the land is left to native plants to help wildlife.
