Álvar de Dios

Álvar de Dios Hernández grew up in El Pego, among the old vines his grandfather farmed in this village in Toro, Spain. He took over those vines in 2008, after a few years working with Fernando Garcia and Dani Landi in the Sierra de Gredos.

That time taught him a Burgundy-like approach, focused on single vineyards and village wines. He set up his own winery in 2014 and bought more old vines in nearby Arribes del Duero the next year. He now farms 12 hectares organically and biodynamically in El Pego, El Maderal and Villadepera.

He labels his wines as Vino de la Tierra so he can work outside the local rules. Expect light, fresh, elegant wines from Tempranillo, Garnacha and old local grapes, from sandy and volcanic soils high up.
