Amalaya

Amalaya means 'hope for a miracle' in the language of the Calchaquí people. The winery is in the Calchaquí Valley in Salta, at a dizzying 1,828 metres. It belongs to the Hess Family Wine Estates, who also own Bodega Colomé nearby.

There are 80 hectares of vines, with 40 more on the way, across two vineyards: one on deep sand at 1,770 metres and one on rocky ground at 1,800 metres. Rain is scarce, so the vines are drip-fed with water that runs off the mountains.

Reds ferment in small concrete tanks and whites in steel. Look out for Malbec with berry fruit and a touch of spice, a bright Torrontés and Riesling blend, and a red blend with Cabernet Franc and Tannat. Fruity, fresh and great value.
