Anthony Girard

Anthony Girard makes Sancerre on his own small estate near Récy, a hamlet at the southern edge of the appellation. His brother Nicolas runs the family domaine, Domaine des Brosses, and that is where Anthony caught the winemaking bug.

He wanted his own label, so first he went travelling. In the Rhône he worked for François Villard and for Stéphane Ogier. Then came harvests further afield, in Chile, Hungary, New Zealand and South Africa. In 2012 he came home, bought nine hectares and built a new winery for his first harvest in 2014.

He farms on organic lines with as few chemicals as he can. The vines average 45 years old, mostly on Sancerre's limestone with some flint. His Sancerre is crisp and precise, with grapefruit, white peach and a stony streak.
