Antichi Poderi Jerzu

Antichi Poderi Jerzu is a co-operative in the village of Jerzu, in the Ogliastra area on Sardinia's east coast. The village doctor, Josto Miglior, started it in 1950 by talking 45 growers into working together to make better wine.

Today 430 growers belong, from nearly every family in the village. Jerzu is a remote place that holds on to its old ways, and it is famous for long lives: four of its 3,200 people are over 100.

The 650 hectares of vines run over the hills from the Gennargentu mountains down towards the sea. Head winemaker Biagio Boi and consultant Franco Bernabei use that spread of sites to make fresh, good-value Vermentino and Cannonau, plus richer reds from older, higher vines.
