Producer Wairarapa, New Zealand
Ata Rangi
In Te Reo Māori, Ata Rangi means 'dawn sky, new beginning'. It is one of New Zealand's most loved Pinot Noir producers, based in Martinborough.
Winery at Martinborough, Wairarapa.
Clive Paton planted a bare, stony paddock on the edge of town in 1980, one of only a handful of growers there at the time. He now runs Ata Rangi with his partner Phyll and his sister Alison. Clive was an early fan of the Abel clone of Pinot Noir. Legend says it was smuggled into New Zealand in a gumboot and seized by a customs officer, Malcolm Abel. Those vines are now the estate's oldest.
Winemaker Helen Masters joined in 2003 and was named New Zealand Winemaker of the Year in 2019. Clive is a keen conservationist who has planted over 75,000 native trees, and sales of one Pinot Noir help Project Crimson protect native trees.
