Producer Alentejo, Portugal
Azamor
Joaquim and Alison Luiz Gomes bought their estate in 1998, in Portugal's Alentejo, and they planted their first vines in 2001. The Alentejo is often called the country's breadbasket and is now known for fruity reds you can rely on.
Summers here are hot and dry, sometimes reaching 45°C. Azamor's 27 hectares sit at 350 metres, which keeps things a little cooler. The vines grow close together on poor clay and schist slopes and give small crops of very concentrated grapes.
The reds mix local grapes such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Trincadeira with Syrah, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Alicante Bouschet. They are bold but polished, with juicy fruit and ripe tannins. There is also a dark, structured Petit Verdot on its own.
