Babich

Babich has a long history for New Zealand. Josip Babich came to New Zealand from Croatia, and in 1916 he made his first wine in Auckland. His family still runs the business, with the third generation, David Babich, in charge.

They farm 449 hectares in thirteen vineyards spread over Marlborough, Hawke's Bay and Auckland, and grow most of their own grapes. In 1987 the Fernhill Vineyard, in Hawke's Bay, became the first registered sustainable vineyard in the country. The Headwaters Vineyard has been certified organic since 2013.

They keep looking ahead. Grape skins and pulp go back out as animal feed and fertiliser, and old vines that come out are burnt in the frost burners.
