Barta Winery

Barta is a new winery with ancient vineyards, in Mád, one of the best-known villages in Hungary's Tokaj region.

From 2003, businessman Károly Barta bought plots on the steep King's Hill slope. He rebuilt its old stone terraces, replanted vineyards that had been left to go wild and built a small winery. He sees himself as a caretaker of the land.

The vines are farmed organically. Young winemaker Vivien Újvári mixes old and new methods to make pure wines full of character. The range is all about Furmint, the local star grape, from dry whites to the famous sweet Szamorodni and Aszú styles.
