Producer Breede River Valley, South Africa

Bergsig Estate

Bergsig Estate sits high on the slopes of the Breede River Valley in South Africa's Western Cape. The Lategan family have owned and run it since 1843, and the name means mountain view in Afrikaans.

Every grape comes from the family's own vineyards, and every wine is made and bottled on the farm. Winters are cold, and a cool spring means slow ripening, so picking usually starts two or three weeks later than in other areas.

De Wet Lategan, from the sixth generation of the family, keeps things going. Sustainable farming comes first, since the land will pass to the next generation.
