Blank Canvas

Blank Canvas is a small Marlborough winery set up in 2012 by winemaker Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker-Thomson, a Master of Wine. Between them they have more than 45 years in wine, and they make small batches from single vineyards across the region.

For years they worked with partner growers. Then in 2025 they bought a home of their own: nine hectares on a bowl-shaped hillside in the Omaka Valley, planted in 2003, with views right across the Wairau Valley. Its clay slopes face many ways, so they can match each grape to the right spot.

Sophie chairs Appellation Marlborough Wine, a group that checks members' wines for quality and origin, and Blank Canvas was a founding member. Their range shows off Marlborough's different corners, with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Noir and Syrah.
