Bodega Agerre
Bodega Agerre is owned by the Ostolaza family. Its 15 hectares of vines look down over Getaria, an old fishing village on the Bay of Biscay, not far from San Sebastián.
The winemaker, Emilio Agerre, is the third generation of his family to do the job. He makes Txakoli in the traditional way, from the local Hondarrabi Zuri grape. The vines are 20 to 30 years old and face east, catching the sun and keeping out of the westerly winds. The Atlantic makes it mild and wet, so the vines are trained nearly two metres high to let the air through.
The wine is fermented with wild yeasts in steel tanks. It is dry, low in alcohol and bursting with green apple and lemon, with a salty little sparkle.
