Bodega Colomé
Bodega Colomé dates from 1831, which makes it Argentina's oldest winery still at work. It sits high in the Calchaquí Valley in Salta, and has one of the highest vineyards in the world, at 3,111 metres.
Winery at Molinos, Salta.
The founder is believed to be Nicolás Severo de Isasmendi y Echalar, the Spanish governor of Salta. In 1854 his daughter brought in Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon vines from before phylloxera, and those vineyards are still farmed today. Swiss businessman Donald Hess bought Colomé in 2001. He put money into the village too, with schools, a community centre and even a museum of art, and many villagers work at the winery.
The 140 hectares of vines grow from 1,700 metres right up to 3,111 metres. The fierce sun at that height gives thick-skinned grapes, and cold nights keep the wines fresh and fragrant. Winemaker Thibaut Delmotte has been in charge since 2005.
