Bodega Garzón

Bodega Garzón is a family winery near Uruguay's Atlantic coast, in Maldonado. Over the last ten years it has become the leading name for top-quality Uruguayan wine.

In 2007 owner Alejandro Bulgheroni asked winemaker Alberto Antonini to look at his olive farm between the village of Garzón and the beach. Alberto thought it looked like his native Tuscany. Tests showed it could make great wine, so they planted Tannat, Uruguay's flagship grape, and Albariño, which loves the cool sea breezes and granite soils. Today there are 12 grapes across about 1,150 tiny plots.

Alberto goes easy on oak, using concrete and big untoasted casks so the fruit shines. The gravity-fed winery was the world's first to be LEED certified for its buildings, and there is a Francis Mallmann restaurant on site.
