Bodegas Gallegas

Bodegas Gallegas is a family winery in the Salnés Valley, in Galicia's Rías Baixas, run by brother and sister Manuel and Myriam Vazquez. It is only five kilometres from the ocean, and you can see it in the sea-themed labels and taste it in the fresh wines.

Winemaker Olga Verde Vieitez used to be a sommelier and learned her craft in Madrid, Chile and New Zealand. Along with the family's own 140 hectares, she buys from 250 local growers, who look after another 120 hectares.

This is Spain's wettest corner, and thick-skinned Albariño copes well with it. Each plot is made on its own in steel tanks, then blended. Salnés gives the most perfumed wines, warmer Condado do Tea gives fuller ones, and cooler Ribeira do Ulla adds structure.
