Bodegas Lan
Bodegas Lan was founded in 1972 in Rioja Alta and mixes old ways with new ideas. Most of its wine comes from one big, beautiful vineyard wrapped in a bend of the Ebro River.
The soils there are poor and stony and some vines are 60 years old, so crops are small and the fruit is concentrated. The site is split into 24 plots, each planted with the grape that suits it best: Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha or Mazuelo.
María Barúa has been head winemaker since 2002. She grew up in Rioja and knows her barrels inside out, using French, American, Pyrenean and Hungarian oak. Lan was the first in Rioja to use a mixed barrel with American oak sides and French oak ends. The range runs from Crianza to Gran Reserva, plus a fresh Verdejo from Rueda made with Olga Tormo.
