Bodegas Valdemar
The story of Bodegas Valdemar starts in 1889, with Joaquin Martínez Bujanda. It is still independent, and it uses only grapes from its own 290 hectares of vines, which is rare in Rioja.
Growing everything themselves keeps the quality steady and lets them try out different sites and little-known grapes. The range runs from fruity, unoaked Riojas to deep, complex wines that will surprise even a seasoned fan.
Their single-vineyard wines are worth a look. A high-altitude site suits Maturana, an old grape that has been brought back, while a slightly lower, warmer one ripens late-ripening Graciano fully. These are made in a separate winery of their own.
