Brolo dei Giusti

A 'brolo', in the north of Italy, is a vineyard with a wall round it, much like a French 'clos'. Brolo dei Giusti wines come from three of these walled vineyards, 13 hectares in all, farmed by the Cantina Valpantena co-operative in Valpolicella.

One sits in the middle of the Valpantena valley, and the other two are in Montorio. Head agronomist Stefano Casali sprays less, watches the water use and has dropped weedkillers, and all three have VIVA sustainable certification. What he learns here he passes on to the co-op's other growers.

The grapes are Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella, trained on the traditional pergola and picked by hand. Luca Degani leads the winemaking. Expect a bright, fresh Valpolicella Superiore made partly from dried grapes, and a deep, concentrated Amarone.
