Ca’ dei Frati

Ca' dei Frati is in Lugana, on the south side of Lake Garda. The Dal Cero family moved here in 1939 and soon saw how good the land was for vines. Today they own more vineyard than anyone else in the Lugana denomination.

The soil was left behind by the glacier that carved out the lake. It drains well and calms the vines down, while the lake takes the edge off the summer heat. In the late 1960s the family also helped set up the Lugana DOC.

Franco runs the vineyard and Igino the cellar. The Lugana grapes are picked by hand and pressed straight away, with no skin contact. Igino holds back malolactic fermentation for lift and leaves the wines on their lees for richness. Turbiana is the main grape, and they make reds, a rosé and a traditional-method sparkling as well.
