Can Sumoi

Out cycling high in the hills of west Penedès, Pepe spotted a run-down 17th-century farmhouse. He came back with Francesc, who loved it just as much, and in 2016 they set about bringing it back to life. The estate covers 400 hectares, mostly woodland, at 600 metres, with views over the Mediterranean. On a clear day you can see Mallorca.

Around the old buildings grow 20 hectares of vines, with Xarel·lo, Parellada, Sumoll and Montònega, on limestone full of sea fossils. They farm in a way they call 'biosynergy', with animals, vines, soil and people working as one. They pick by hand, use wild yeasts and keep sulphur low. All six wines, still and sparkling, are wonderfully fresh.
