Cantina Atzei

Cantina Atzei is a Sardinian winery in the Fantini group, which Valentino Sciotti set up in 1994 to make top wine from the south of Italy and the islands. He has loved Sardinia and its wines all his working life, and Atzei gave him the perfect excuse to explore more of it.

The vineyards surround Mogoro, a village a little way south of Oristano, in the island's south-west. Dennis Verdecchia heads the winemaking, with Sardinian winemaker Daniele Manca and consultant Alberto Antonini.

Like the other Fantini wineries, the idea is to make great wine from lesser-known places and grapes. Look out for a lively, textured Vermentino and a red from Monica, a local grape grown only in parts of the island, with cherry, plum and a touch of spice.
