Cantina di Custoza

Cantina di Custoza is a co-operative south-east of Lake Garda, founded in 1968. Its 200 members farm more than 1,000 hectares of vines around the small village of Custoza, which gives its name to the local white wine.

In the late 1990s Matt Thomson, of Blank Canvas, made wine here, and local winemaker Luca Oliosi still runs some of the methods he brought in. A newer tie-up with Cantina Valpantena adds the skills of Michele Peroni and Luca Degani.

The low hills here were formed by glaciers and make great soil for vines. Custoza is always a blend, mainly of Garganega, Trebbiano, Friulano, Cortese and Incrocio Manzoni, each picked and pressed on its own. It is bottled young to keep it fresh and delicate, and a fuller Superiore spends a short time in oak.
