Cantina di Gambellara
Cantina di Gambellara is a co-operative founded in 1947. Nearly 300 members grow grapes on 600 hectares where the provinces of Vicenza and Verona meet, a short way east of Soave. In 2015 it joined forces with Cantina Colli Vicentini.
Matt Thomson of Blank Canvas has advised on the winemaking since 2017, working with the co-op's oenologists Stefano Lovato and Damiano Noro. They pick the best Garganega from the volcanic hills that form a natural bowl around Gambellara, for a dry, scented, mineral white.
There is plenty more besides: a riper than usual Merlot, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Nero and Prosecco. Look out too for sparkling Durello, made from the Durella grape, which has grown in the mountains of Lessini since the Middle Ages and has lovely bright acidity.
