Cantina Valpantena

Cantina Valpantena is among the best co-operatives in Italy. It has 650 hectares of vines in the Valpantena valley. Luca Degani has run it since 1995, and head winemaker Michele Peroni works with consultant Matt Thomson of Blank Canvas, who has worked here since 1999.

The ancient Greeks called it the 'valley of the gods'. It is known for its reds, thanks to limestone soils and a cool breeze that comes down off the Dolomite foothills. The valley has always been rated at least as highly as the Classico zone.

The range covers fresh Garganega whites and the full family of local reds: Valpolicella, a ripe Ripasso, Amarone and an elegant Recioto. There are good-value everyday blends too, and some of the Alpha Zeta wines are made here.
