Capezzana
Capezzana sits in Carmignano, just west of Florence, and its story goes back a very long way. Contracts to rent out vines and olive groves here, dated 804 AD, still survive in the Florence archives.
Today the Contini Bonacossi family run the estate, now in their fourth generation. Beatrice looks after marketing and communication, and her sister Benedetta makes the wine, with Franco Bernabei as their consultant.
There are 80 hectares of vines and 30,000 olive trees, all farmed organically and certified since 2015. The reds lean on Sangiovese, sometimes with a little Cabernet Sauvignon, and have silky tannins and bright fruit. Back in 1979 the family also began making a Bordeaux-style blend here.
