Producer Douro, Portugal
Casa Ferreirinha
Casa Ferreirinha was the first Douro producer to focus on still wine rather than Port. Fernando Nicolau de Almeida founded it in 1952, and it has led the way for quality Douro table wine ever since.
The name comes from the nickname of Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, who ran the Ferreira Port house in the late 1800s. Sogrape bought the business in 1987. Today it has 520 hectares of vines across all three parts of the Douro, and its main estate is close to the Spanish border.
Luís Sottomayor now leads the winemaking. He trained under the founder. He keeps the Douro's natural exuberance in check to make reds, whites and rosés with freshness, good texture and depth. The top wines come only from the Douro Superior. They make organic olive oil too.
