Castello della Sala

Niccolò Antinori bought Castello della Sala, a fourteenth-century castle in Umbria, in 1940. He wanted white wines that could stand alongside his Tuscan reds.

Chardonnay does especially well here, and the range also includes a full, herby blend of Sauvignon and Semillon in the Bordeaux style. The people of the castle once ruled the whole province of Orvieto, so there is an Orvieto too. It is a Superiore, which means much lower yields and more concentration. As on all the Antinori estates, chemicals are kept to a bare minimum.
