Castelnau Garenne

Domaine de Castelnau Garenne is a 160-hectare estate near Pézenas in the Languedoc, midway between the Mediterranean and the Massif Central. Fresh sea breezes help the grapes keep their acidity.

Winery at Pézenas, Languedoc-Roussillon.

Owner Christophe Muret grew melons before he turned to vines in 1997. Garenne refers to the wild rabbits he used to spot among the vines in those early days. He has always farmed sustainably and looks after his soils of limestone, clay and loam, which hold water well in hot years.

South African-born winemaker François Prinsloo picks at night to keep things fresh, then ferments in temperature-controlled steel tanks. Expect crisp whites from Sauvignon Blanc and Picpoul de Pinet, a lively Cinsault and Syrah rosé, and a peppery Syrah.
