Château Cantemerle

Château Cantemerle stands in the commune of Macau, at the southern end of the Médoc. It was the last estate to be added to the fifth growths in the 1855 classification, after a strong push by Caroline de Villeneuve-Durfort.

The estate covers about 200 hectares, and close to half of that is left as woods, parkland and meadow. The vines grow on 98 hectares of deep gravel and average around 40 years old. Cabernet Sauvignon makes up most of the planting.

The Villeneuve family held the place for centuries, then the Dubos family. The winemaking aims to be gentle, coaxing flavour out rather than forcing it. The estate also makes a lighter red from its younger vines, made for drinking early.
