Château de Fontenille

Château de Fontenille is an old estate in the Entre-Deux-Mers. Stéphane Defraine has owned it since 1989 and has been slowly bringing it back to life. Vines have grown here since the 13th century.

A UNESCO-protected pilgrimage route runs through the vineyards, and for hundreds of years monks from the nearby abbey looked after the vines. Stéphane loves the region and is president of the local growers' syndicat. Today there are 63 hectares, split into 67 plots, on gravel and clay between the Garonne and the Dordogne. The strong winds help keep the grapes healthy.

Expect classic Bordeaux styles: Merlot-led reds with a little Cabernet, and a fresh, unoaked white from Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, Semillon and Muscadelle.
