Château Macquin
Château Macquin has made wine since 1885. Its founder, François-Albert Macquin, was the first person to replant vines in Saint-Émilion after phylloxera.
His grandson Denis and Denis's wife, Christine Corre-Macquin, now run it, with 27 hectares in Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. The château is in Saint-Georges, three kilometres north of Saint-Émilion and the smallest Bordeaux appellation at 180 hectares. Its height gives the wines freshness and concentration, and the south-facing vines, some 60 years old, grow on clay and limestone.
They farm without herbicides or pesticides. Instead they play musical vibrations, called proteodies, to the vines to fend off certain diseases. The wine is mostly Merlot, with raspberry, blackcurrant and a little spice.
