Cleto Chiarli

The Chiarli family and Lambrusco go back a long way. Back in 1860 Cleto Chiarli set up the first wine company in Emilia-Romagna, after the Lambrusco he made for his Modena restaurant proved a hit.

His great-grandsons Mauro and Anselmo now own the business, and in 2001 they built a new winery in the founder's name. They have more than 100 hectares of vines. Near Castelvetro, silt over gravel grows deep-coloured Grasparossa. North of Modena, by the Secchia river, clay silt suits the paler red Sorbara.

Expect fresh, fruity Lambrusco in many shades, from pink to deep ruby, plus whites from Pignoletto.
