Cramele Recaş

Cramele Recaş is a big family-owned winery in western Romania, with its main winery at Recaş. Three families decided to invest in it in 1998.

They started with 650 hectares of scraggy vines and a rusty winery that had belonged to the state. Today they own about 1,250 hectares, and the business is a major player well beyond Romania. Philip Cox, who swapped Bristol for Romania early in the 1990s, is a co-owner and runs the operation. Some of the vineyards are near Timişoara, and about half the wine goes abroad.
