de la Bégude
La Bégude is among the oldest estates in Bandol, on the Provence coast. It started life as a medieval stop for pilgrims, and the name means place to drink in Provençal. It lay empty until Guillaume Tari of Château Giscours bought and restored it in 1996.
He replanted the steep terraces, 45 hectares in all, mostly with Mourvèdre, the main grape of Bandol. The estate now holds over 150 clones of it, the largest collection in the world. It went organic in 2008 and biodynamic in 2023. The estate has recently passed to the Roulleau family, who also own Château Dauzac in Margaux.
At 410 metres it is the highest estate in Bandol. Clay and limestone, height and sea breezes keep the wines fresh despite all the sun. Expect deep, structured reds and fine rosé.
