Dog Point
Ivan and Margaret Sutherland planted the Dog Point vineyard in Marlborough in 1979, long before the region was a household name.
Ivan went on to be chief viticulturalist at Cloudy Bay, where he met head winemaker James Healy. Together they set out to make their own wine, and the first Dog Point wines came out in 2004. These days the younger Sutherlands are in charge.
Every grape from the low-cropped organic vineyard is picked by hand, and the wines are fermented partly or fully with wild yeasts. They make just four wines, in a style that is complex but easy to enjoy, and they age well.
