Domaine des Sables Verts

Young couple Caroline Meurée and Hervé Malinge first met as students in Bordeaux. Neither is from the Loire, yet in 2019 they took on Domaine des Sables Verts, right in the middle of Saumur-Champigny, and got stuck straight in.

They farm 16 hectares organically across several villages, 15 of them Cabernet Franc and one of Chenin Blanc. The soils are deep clay-limestone, full of tuffeau and a green sand the locals call sables verts, which gave the estate its name.

In the cellar they keep things hands-off. The reds are juicy and fresh with soft tannins, and the Chenin whites have lovely texture. They even own a slice of Les Poyeux, one of the Loire's best-known red wine sites.
