Domaine du Château Philippe le Hardi

This Santenay château, once called Château de Santenay, was the grand home of Philip the Bold, first Duke of Burgundy. He is the duke who banned Gamay from the Côte d'Or in 1395, leaving those slopes to Pinot Noir. Look out for its colourful glazed tile roof.

After years of neglect, the bank Crédit Agricole took it over in 2010. The new owners built a modern cellar in 2014 and brought in a lively team led by François des Moutis, who uses little new oak and a gentle hand.

The domaine farms 106 hectares sustainably and is moving to organics. Most are in Mercurey, with more in Côte d'Or villages like Chassagne and Saint-Aubin, and since 2019 some in the Côte de Nuits too.
