Domaine Jean Fournier

Domaine Jean Fournier is one of the longest-standing names in Marsannay. Laurent Fournier joined his father Jean in 2001 and is known both for great Marsannay and for standing up for the Aligoté grape.

Jean first saw the promise of the village's best sites in 1964. Today the domaine has 22 hectares, mostly in Marsannay, and Laurent is leading the push for premier cru status there. He moved the estate to organic farming in the early 2000s. Horses work the soil, and the vines are planted very close together, 13,000 to 20,000 per hectare, so the roots dig deep.

In the cellar he keeps a light touch, with no more than 25 per cent new oak and little sulphur. Laurent is one of eight founders of Les Aligoteurs, a growers' group that champions Aligoté in Burgundy.
