Producer Piedmont, Italy

Domenico Clerico

Domenico Clerico was one of a small band of growers who led the revival of Barolo and the Langhe from the late 1970s into the early 1980s, and helped put the area firmly on the world map.

Winery at Monforte d'Alba, Piedmont.

His family had a farm with five hectares of vines in Monforte d'Alba and sold their grapes to co-ops. In 1976 Domenico and his wife Giuliana began making and bottling their own wine. He added plots in Bussia, Ginestra, Pajana and Mosconi, and later in Serralunga d'Alba. Today there are 21 hectares.

He loved to experiment, and in time settled on less oak and macerations of 20 to 25 days to let each vineyard speak. Domenico died in 2017. Giuliana now runs the estate with winemaker Oscar Arrivabene.
