Donnafugata

The Rallo family set up Donnafugata in 1983 to show off what Sicily's own grapes can do. They had already made wine in Marsala since 1851, in old cellars that run under the city.

Winery at Marsala, Sicily.

Today they have five Sicilian estates: the Marsala cellars, a modern winery in the hills at Contessa Entellina, vines in Vittoria, on the island of Pantelleria, and high up on the northern slopes of Etna.

The name means fleeing woman, after Queen Maria Carolina, who escaped to Sicily from Naples when Napoleon's troops arrived. The wines mix Sicilian tradition with a modern touch, from Nero d'Avola and Frappato to Carricante and sweet Zibibbo. Since 2017 they have also worked with Dolce & Gabbana on a special range.
