El Coto

El Coto started in Rioja Alavesa in 1970 and has grown from small beginnings into one of Rioja's best-known names. It is now the biggest vineyard owner in the region, with more than 730 hectares spread over Rioja Alta, Rioja Oriental and Rioja Alavesa.

In 2023 it was certified by Sustainable Wineries for Climate Protection, thanks to solar panels, lighter bottles and better packaging.

Head winemaker César Fernández has grapes picked by hand into small crates, and the modern winery handles them gently. The reds are fresh and juicy with well-judged oak, and there are bright whites and a strawberry-scented rosado too. Their Finca Carbonera estate is the highest in Rioja, at 875 metres.
