Estancia Los Cardones

This 25-hectare estate lies in Cafayate, in Salta, way up in the north of Argentina. It takes its name from the giant cacti, or cardones, that dot the landscape.

The great height, bright sun and ancient soils drew viticulturist Alejandro Sejanovich here. With Jeff Mausbach and Jorge Crotta, who he had worked with at Catena Zapata, he set up Mil Suelos, a project to champion Argentina's most distinctive vineyards.

The vines face east in the Calchaquí Valleys, getting morning sun and afternoon shade for fresh, scented fruit. Broken soils, including striped granite known as tigerstone, give grapes with deep colour and purity.
