Producer Coastal Region, South Africa

Fairview

Fairview in Paarl is one of South Africa's oldest farms, with vines first planted in 1699. Charles Back's grandfather bought it in 1937, and Charles joined in 1978. He is known for bringing Mediterranean grapes to the Cape and won the IWC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.

All their wine is certified Fairtrade, though Charles prefers to let the wines do the talking. An elected committee of farm workers helps fund education and training.

The vines sit on the cooler southern slopes of Paarl Mountain, and lately also in Darling near the Atlantic. Winemaker Anthony de Jager picks the reds earlier for extra freshness. Expect crisp Sauvignon, creamy Chenin and lively Shiraz and Pinotage.
