Fontodi

The Manetti family bought Fontodi in 1968, though the family have been in Chianti for centuries, making fine terracotta at their works in Ferrone. Over 50 years they have turned a crumbling farmhouse with a few vines into one of Chianti Classico's top estates.

Giovanni Manetti has run it since 1980. Most of his 110 hectares, 90% of it Sangiovese, lie in Panzano's sunny bowl known as the conca d'oro. High sites mean cool nights and good freshness, and the farming is organic and biodynamic.

In the cellar he keeps a light touch, using low-toast oak and clay amphorae from the family works. He has also restored old vines high up in Lamole for a lighter, more fragrant Sangiovese.
