G.D. Vajra
The Vaira family farm in Vergne, a small village above Barolo on the western side of the zone. Their 20 hectares of Barolo vines sit high, between 270 and 480 metres, on soils of marl with the odd vein of sandstone.
Winery at Vergne, Piedmont.
The land has been in the family since the 1920s, but it was Aldo who brought it back to life. Sent to the farm for a summer in 1968 after joining a student protest, he came home wanting to be a farmer. He studied agriculture and went organic from the start, which was rare then. His first vintage, 1972, was so poor that no Barolo was made at all.
Aldo and his wife Milena now run things with their children. Isidoro works the vines with his dad, Giuseppe runs the cellar and Francesca looks after the rest. Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Freisa all get long skin contact, for wines that are good young but can age too.
