Giant Steps
Phil Sexton, originally from Margaret River, founded Giant Steps in the Yarra Valley in 1997. Working with winemaker Steve Flamsteed, it made its name with cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Mel Chester joined in 2021 to head up both winemaking and the vineyards, and the wines have gone from strength to strength. The Halliday Wine Companion made Giant Steps its 2025 Winery of the Year.
The fruit is hand picked from the estate's own vineyards. Wild yeasts do the work, the winery runs on gravity, and the wines see very little fining or filtering. The regional wines show off classic Yarra character, while the single-vineyard wines come from the best sites in the best years. There is a Tasmanian Pinot Noir too.
