Giovanni Almondo

The Almondo family have lived in Montà, in the Roero hills just north of Alba, for more than 600 years. Yet it was Domenico Almondo, in the early 1980s, who first made wine from their 18 hectares.

His sons Stefano and Domenico now work alongside him. Domenico made a name supplying top Piemonte restaurants with both asparagus and Arneis, though these days the Arneis keeps him too busy for much asparagus.

He was born in a farmhouse below one of the highest hills in the Roero. The soils up here have more clay and chalk than the usual Roero sand, which gives the Arneis real depth and a scent that builds with time. Further south, near Canale, the family also grow Nebbiolo, aged in big Slavonian oak casks.
