Gran Sasso
Gran Sasso belongs to the Fantini group, set up in 1994 by Valentino Sciotti to make top-quality Abruzzo wine. It takes its name from the highest peak in the Apennines, which shelters the vines from weather coming in from the west.
Winery at Ortona, Abruzzo.
Add sea breezes off the Adriatic and a real mix of soils, with clay, sand and limestone up on the slopes and gravel lower down, and you get very good fruit. Rino Santeusanio and Francesco De Santis make the wines, and consultant Alberto Antonini advises. Their wines have a freshness you don't often find in the area.
They work hand in hand with local growers. Alongside plummy Montepulciano there is Trebbiano from the cooler foothills and Pecorino, a fairly rare local white grape.
