Greywacke

Kevin Judd started Greywacke in 2009. He was one of the early pioneers in Marlborough, and his wines did a lot to put the region on the map.

The name comes from his first vineyard there, in Rapaura, where the soils are full of rounded greywacke stones. It is a grey sedimentary rock, made of hard sandstone and darker mudstone, found all over Marlborough.

You will find a classic, zesty Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc here, but also a wild-fermented version made in old oak, which can take nearly a year to finish and gives a rich, savoury white. There is Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir too, and each year Kevin keeps a few bottles back in the cellar to release later on.
